Conflating these two categories distorts ROI calculations in both directions. Teams that only track sourced pipeline understate event value because they miss the acceleration effect on existing deals. Teams that only track influenced pipeline overstate it by claiming credit for deals that would have closed anyway. Separating the two gives leadership an accurate picture of both demand generation and deal acceleration from events.
Key insight:
Sourced pipeline answers "Did this event create new demand?" Influenced pipeline answers "Did this event accelerate existing deals?" Both matter, but they answer different strategic questions. Track them separately, report them separately.

Leads from a Tuesday trade show close by the following Friday, but the "30-day influenced pipeline" report runs monthly and misses deals that close before the first reporting window.
Challenge:
Standard attribution windows are designed for enterprise B2B cycles (3-6+ months). Short-cycle companies need tighter measurement or they miss the connection between event and revenue entirely.
Approach:
- Add a 7-day and 14-day attribution window alongside the standard 30/60/90
- Use "event-sourced closed-won" as the primary metric instead of pipeline (since deals close fast enough to measure revenue directly)
- Set up real-time or daily dashboard refresh instead of weekly/monthly
Edge Case 2: Multi-Event Contact Attribution
Scenario:
A prospect visits your booth at three events over six months (SaaStr, Dreamforce, a regional field event). They become an opportunity after the third event. Which event gets attribution credit?
Challenge:
First-touch gives all credit to SaaStr. Last-touch gives all credit to the field event. Neither is accurate -- the cumulative exposure likely drove the conversion.
Approach:
- Track all three events as campaign memberships on the contact record
- Use "influenced" attribution for all three events in pipeline reporting
- Use "sourced" attribution only for the first event (SaaStr) since that was the originating touchpoint
- In the post-mortem for each event, report both sourced and influenced numbers
- For budget allocation decisions, weight the sourced event higher but do not ignore the others
Key validation:
Total influenced pipeline across all events will exceed total actual pipeline (because the same opportunity appears in multiple events' reports). This is expected and correct -- it measures reach, not unique pipeline. Do not sum influenced pipeline across events and call it total pipeline.
Edge Case 3: No Historical Event Data for Benchmarking
Scenario:
Client is running their first formal event or has no CRM records from previous events. There is no baseline data to compare against.
Approach:
- Use industry benchmarks from this document as the starting baseline
- Set conservative targets for the first event: 2:1 pipeline ROI, 20% lead-to-MQL conversion
- Treat the first event as the "benchmark-setting" event -- measure everything, even imperfectly
- Compare second event to first event, not to industry averages
- After 3-4 events, the client's own data becomes the primary benchmark
Edge Case 4: Venue-Provided Scanners with No API Integration
Scenario:
The event venue only provides basic badge scanners that export to CSV. There is no API integration available, and the client's CRM requires structured data import.
Approach:
